Good God, there are so many people in this world that define themselves with what they do & not who they are. That’s a bit annoying, isn’t it?

If I ask you to describe yourself and you say something like “I’m a gamer” or “I’m a nerd”, that tells me nothing about you. All that says is you’d rather live in someone else’s world than yours for even you to know who you are. Or it says that you’d rather just rely on societal norms to create a single-word summation that could be fleshed out with beautiful complexities and anecdotes of what makes you interesting!

..What? Oh sorry, was just looking at OkCupid profiles. Move along now.

I definitely understand the frustration at this, but I think it’s something of a defense mechanism. A lot of people don’t know who they are, or certainly not in a way they can put to words. Or they may feel too vulnerable to lay it out on a dating site. It’s a lot easier to bond/risk being judged on “I play video games” than deeper things. I mean, I’m sure this isn’t the case in all situations, and I’m sure most people don’t even do it consciously, but I try to give them the benefit of the doubt :)
